The Marikana Series
A visual reckoning with memory, justice, and collective grief
This series is not just art, it’s remembrance. Marikana is my way of holding space for a tragedy that shook South Africa to its core. On August 16, 2012, lives were lost, voices were silenced, and a nation was forced to confront its pain. Through charcoal, digital sketching, and paint, I’ve tried to capture the weight of that day, not just the violence, but the humanity behind it.
These pieces are layered with emotion: sorrow, rage, resilience, and love. They speak for the miners, their families, and the communities still carrying the echoes of injustice. Each stroke is a form of protest, a call to remember, and a refusal to let history fade into silence.
Marikana is my offering to the tradition of art as activism. May it stir reflection, conversation, and a deeper commitment to truth.
